“Rubble of Houses”

A Musical Tribute to Gaza and a Call for Support

I am pleased to share with you the completion and recording of my latest composition, “Rubble of Houses.” This piece is not just a musical creation; it is a heartfelt reflection on the devastating impacts of conflict on my hometown of Gaza City. Through this article, I aim to convey the emotional depth of this work and its purpose—to raise funds to support my family in Gaza and other families who continue to endure unimaginable hardships.

The Inspiration Behind “Rubble of Houses”

“Rubble of Houses” was born out of my profound sorrow and the haunting memories of the destroyed homes and streets of Gaza City. The composition, crafted in the serial music style using a 12-tone technique, seeks to express the turmoil and desolation witnessed in the aftermath of war. Each dissonant note and atonal melody in this piece serve as a voice for the ruined structures and the people whose lives were upended.

The Music

In “Rubble of Houses,” I utilized the serial music style to capture the chaotic and fragmented nature of a war-torn landscape. The piece navigates through stark contrasts and abrupt transitions, mirroring the sudden and devastating disruptions in the lives of Gaza’s residents. Despite the pervasive dissonance, there are moments of fragile beauty—symbols of hope and resilience amidst the ruins.

The Pianist

I am honored to have Kari Dajani, an extraordinary and sensitive artist, bring “Rubble of Houses” to life. Kari’s interpretation of the piece captures its emotional depth and technical complexity, providing a powerful and moving performance that resonates with the essence of the composition. Their dedication and artistry are integral to conveying the story and spirit of Gaza through this music.

Program Notes

“Rubble of Houses” is a deeply personal and evocative composition that channels the profound sense of loss and desolation experienced while witnessing the destruction of homes in Gaza City. Utilizing the serial music style, this piece transcends traditional harmonic boundaries, reflecting the shattered reality of a war-torn landscape through a meticulously crafted 12-tone row.

In this composition, I sought to embody the very essence of the broken and abandoned structures. The dissonant intervals and atonal melodies serve as a poignant metaphor for the chaotic and fragmented remnants of once vibrant neighborhoods. The stark contrasts and abrupt transitions within the piece mirror the abrupt disruption of daily life and the unsettling quiet that follows such devastation.

As you listen, you may discern a narrative woven into the music—a narrative of sorrow, resilience, and the silent screams of the destroyed homes. Each tone in the series represents a
fragment of memory, a cry for what once was, and a longing for peace. The sparse textures and haunting melodies evoke the emptiness and despair left in the wake of destruction, while the occasional consonant harmonies hint at the lingering hope and the enduring spirit of the people of Gaza.

“Rubble of Houses” is not just a musical expression; it is a tribute to my hometown, a lament for its lost beauty, and a testament to the enduring human spirit amidst adversity. Through this piece, I invite the listener to reflect on the impact of conflict, to hear the voices of the ruins, and to remember the streets of Gaza that still live on in memory and music.
