“Last Day in Gaza”: A Nocturne for Mona

As a music composer, there’s nothing more personal than dedicating a piece of music to someone close to your heart. That’s why I was so inspired to write “Nocturne No,1 : Last Day in Gaza” for my dear friend Mona Kriegler. Mona, who was once the director of Goethe Institute in Palestine, had come to visit us in the city of Gaza as part of her farewell tour. On her last day here, I noticed the sadness and uncertainty in her eyes, and I could tell that she was filled with questions about whether she would ever return to this beautiful place.

It was then that I knew I had to write something special for Mona, to express my gratitude for her love and passion for Palestine, and to give her a piece of music that would always remind her of her time here in Gaza. I chose the Nocturne style for this piece because it perfectly captures the haunting beauty and emotional depth of the city and its people. And with the help of a talented pianist named Julian Zalla, I was able to bring my vision to life.

The result is a breathtaking piece of music that will take you on a journey through the winding streets of Gaza and the memories that Mona holds dear. From the delicate and mournful notes of the opening to the triumphant and uplifting conclusion, “Nocturne Number One: Last Day in Gaza” is a true work of art.
